The Diabetes and Wellness Education Program is offered at the Absentee Shawnee Tribal complex and at the AST Clinic in Little Axe. The program provides diabetes and wellness education to Absentee Shawnee Tribal members, tribal employees, and Native Americans in the surrounding counties. The goals of the program are to decrease the prevalence and/or the complications of diabetes, by assisting people to make healthy lifestyles choices. These choices include eating healthy, becoming more active, weight loss and reducing stress. The program provides education and information that is culturally based and sensitive to the needs of the individual. Special emphasis on prevention and individualized help and support is available to people who have or are at risk for diabetes.

 

EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

MONTHLY PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: such as self defense, skating, soccer, fun walk, jump rope clinic, softball, tennis

WEEKLY PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: walking, aerobics, chair exercise, circuit strength training
FEAT (Finding Extra Activity Time): power walks at break and lunch times.

WEIGHT WRESTLERS: 12 week weight reduction program.

NUTRITION AND EXERCISE SUPPORT GROUPS

HEADSTART: Physical and nutrition activities provided monthly at CTSA Centers to prevent diabetes and promote a healthy lifestyle.

PODIATRY/FOOT CARE: provided at the Little Axe Clinic.

PUBLIC SCHOOL PROGRAMS: Teaching healthy lifestyles through experiential learning techniques.

STAR (Diabetes Self Care): An education program for people who have diabetes or who care for a family member with diabetes.

DIABETES SCREENINGS

STEPS: A self-paced exercise and activity program established help to decrease the risk of diabetes and heart disease in Native Americans.


NYPD (Native Youth Preventing Diabetes): Annual camp teaches children how to "Beat diabetes". Activities include nutrition, physical and self esteem classes in a camp setting.
