Job Title : Domestic Violence Advocate
Reports To : Tresha Spoon (Director)
Type of Position: Full Time (Salary)
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Assists victims of domestic violence and promotes trust and communication between the victims and the Tribal Attorney's Office as the cases proceed through the criminal justice system.
Maintains an office in and oversee operations of Absentee Shawnee Domestic Violence Shelter.
Preference will be given to persons with the following or similar certifications:
Certified Domestic & Sexual Violence Response Professional, State-Certified Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention Training Program, or SANE-SART (sexual assault nurse examiner/sexual assault response team)
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Responsible for day-to-day operations of the OVW Domestic Violence Shelter and reports directly to the Family Services Director regarding the program's progress. With the advice and approval of the Family Services Director, formulates and implements procedures and recommends policies designed to enhance the effectiveness of the program and to further the goals, policies and initiatives of the program.
Works with the Advisory Council on a monthly basis to further the goals, policies and initiatives of the program.
Contacts and counsels victims regarding their particular situation.
Assists victims in knowing their rights about obtaining an Order of Protection and what to do when the Order is violated.
Prepares the victim for court testimony and accompanies the victim to court, arranging for child care if necessary.
Maintains regular office hours for meeting with victims to make it easier for the victim to initiate criminal proceedings or receive assistance.
Obtains full and complete statements from victims as well as medical releases to provide necessary evidence for prosecution.
Provides referrals to victims for counseling, support groups and financial assistance to better support the victim.
Serves as a resource to law enforcement agencies to assist with the emergency needs of victims.
Serves as a resource to the Tribal Court to provide court ordered services or refer clients to these services.
Responsible for participation in special projects such as development of training programs and presentations to law enforcement agencies, community agencies and community groups to inform about domestic violence problems and how to deal with them.
Works to develop program sustainability by writing grants, contracts and/or agreements with funding agencies.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Shelter paid and volunteer staff.
REQUIREMENTS:
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each primary duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Preferred Master level certified or licensed case manager/counselor. Position may be filled temporarily with a (B. A.) from a four-year college or university with a major in social work or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience pending graduation.
LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as law enforcement reports, government or agency regulations and legal interpretations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and policy and procedure recommendations. Ability to speak effectively before individuals, public groups and employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to calculate figures and amounts required to assist with budget management.
REASONING ABILITY to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Assist families to resolve complex family situations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT The employee work environment may have some hostile characteristics encountered while performing the primary functions of this job. Clients may be encounter primarily in their home or other site such as a police station or hospital. The employee should have knowledge of techniques to deal with hostile clients.
