TAX COMMISSION

It is the policy of the Absentee Shawnee Tribal Government to provide governmental services within the jurisdiction of the Tribe. To finance the Tribe’s governmental responsibilities and regulate those operating within its jurisdiction, the Tribe has the inherent sovereign authority to impose taxes on goods and activity within its jurisdiction and to license and regulate certain conduct. The Licensing and Tax Code sets forth the taxes, regulation and licensing of conduct and activity within the Tribal jurisdiction.

or proclamations by the AST Governor, and acts of nature.

Creation and Composition

The Absentee Shawnee Tax Commission was created and is responsible for carrying out the duties and functions assigned to it in the Absentee Shawnee Licensing and Tax Code. The Commission consists of three (3) members who are appointed by the AST Executive Committee and serve two (2) year terms. The Tax Commission meets the 3rd Tuesday of every month.

Tribal tags are available to enrolled Absentee Shawnee members residing in Oklahoma.

Must provide: AST enrollment card, Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License, Valid Oklahoma Security Verification, proof of residency, as required, and Notarized Title, MSO, or Bill of Sale.

Renewals: Current tribal tags in good standing may be renewed through the mail. See the bottom of your renewal notice for list of required documents.

Unroadworthy Vehicle Affidavit: If you have a vehicle currently registered with the Absentee Shawnee Tribe that is temporarily not operational due to major mechanical problems and it’s time to renew your tag, ask about the Unroadworthy Vehicle Affidavit – it could prevent late penalties.
