General Description

The purpose of the position is responsibility for the in-school Eagle Adventure Program, after school health and tutoring along with multiple other aspects of activity- based interactive nutrition education through community outreach efforts to promote wellness within the Absentee Shawnee Tribe service area under the supervision of the Diabetes and Wellness Program Director and Oklahoma Tribal Engagement Partners (OKTEP). Continuation of position is contingent based on availability of grant funds.

Responsibilities

  • Satisfactory job performance will be determined by successful execution of the following:
  • Successful preparation and implementation of Eagle Adventure diabetes prevention program for youth to achieve positive health and nutrition outcomes. Additional emphasis on school policy systems and environmental change, after-school programming, camp, and community activities.
  • Will work non-traditional work schedule dependent on program needs.
  • Demonstrate and participate in healthful food choice and tasting activities alongside youth.
  • Demonstrate and participate in physical activity alongside youth.
  • Document learner progress and program impact through Eagle Adventure pre/post tests and all other documentation/reports required by (Tribal Department) and OKTEP.
  • Assist in creating science-based educational materials and/or utilize existing research-based materials to support the delivery of educational programs to youth and adults.
  • Collaborate with Tribal, OKTEP staff, school system, and other community partners to organize and provide nutrition and physical activity events for SNAP and FDPIR eligible individuals such as day and overnight camps, field trips, health fairs, as well as recruitment of potential Eagle Adventure schools, etc.
  • Exhibits excellent communication and organization skills in order to coordinate educational events; Serve as an effective team member of OKTEP, (Tribal Department), and other Oklahoma SNAP-ED Implementing Agencies.
  • Travel to sites outside of assigned workstation when needed.
  • Mentor new educators as assigned.
  • Regular attendance is required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a variety of settings: schools, health centers, community centers, and agencies. Work involves vehicle operation in isolated rural areas, on unimproved roads and in heavily congested traffic areas. Must be aware of all risks involved and be willing to take precautions as requested or required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work driving a vehicle in all types of weather and on all types of roads. Must physically be able to walk, climb, and go over rough terrain and up and down stairs at homes, schools or community facilities. Incumbent must be able to lift at least fifty (50) pounds. Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License and reliable transportation. Must be able to pass a background check. Must show proof of current vaccination records and test negative on two consecutive tuberculosis tests upon hire.

Education/Qualification Requirements

  • Education – Bachelor Degree Preferred in Family and Consumer Science, Nutrition, Education,
  • Public Health or related field.
  • Experience – Two (2) years of experience working with elementary age youth or in a Tribal Youth Program. Experience in curriculum and program development preferred. Experience participating in community based research preferred. Experience working in Tribal communities preferred.
  • Licenses & Certification – CPR certification or willing to obtain is required, Serve Safe Certification or willing to obtain is required.
  • Must possess a valid Oklahoma State Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of acceptable standards of community nutrition and health promotion principle and theories.
  • Knowledge of age appropriate teaching/counseling techniques, maintain good communication skills and interpersonal skills with children and parents; punctual, prepared, and professional. Skills necessary to successfully manage a classroom.
  • Proficient in public speaking with groups of youth and adults; effective written and verbal communication skills in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Ability to communicate and accept varied lifestyles, healing methods and practices.
  • Knowledge of safety and risk management concepts and standards.
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate with healthcare professionals to ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures.
  • Skill in organizing multiple projects including planning, goal setting and prioritizing, in order to manage projects effectively.
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with health care professionals as well as the public, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of privacy act and maintenance of confidentiality.
  • Skill in use of computer and other office equipment including: Microsoft Office Suite and email; maintains knowledge of miscellaneous office duties including filing, copying, typing, and scheduling.
  • Ability to motivate oneself and work independently while also working in a team environment, works well with people in all types of situations.
