General Description

This position will be required to handle the day-to-day operations of the Cultural/Historical Preservation Department, which include, but not limited to, managing the budget, reviewing incoming correspondence and preparing outgoing correspondence for the Department.  Promoting and preserving the Shawnee language and cultural resources.  Responsible for the management of the Tribe’s historical archives. 

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the development of yearly department goals/objective and budgets to accomplish all of the major duties of this position.
  • Responsible for filing/answering of incoming/outgoing correspondence within the department.
  • Responsible for planning, organizing and scheduling of cultural preservation activities throughout the year for Tribal members such as language classes, clothing demonstration classes, gardening, food preservation classes, etc.
  • Responsible for compilation of list of Tribal members who still posses the old life ways of Shawnee people that are willing to teach.
  • Responsible for organizing classes in order to promote, preserve and pass on these old ways.
  • Responsible for gathering, cataloging historical archives in all areas affecting the Tribe (such as Tribal prehistory and modern day history of the Tribe which would include political, economic development, etc.)
  • Responsible for the safe and secure storage of items collected.
  • Supervises: NAPRA, THPO, Gift Shop and Cultural/Historical Preservation Department employees.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Absentee Shawnee Tribal Representative. 

Education Requirements

Must have knowledge of Absentee Shawnee Tribe history, culture, traditions and language.  Communicates effectively both orally and in writing in dealing with Tribal staff, Tribal leaders and State and Federal agencies.  Possess grant-writing skills.  Ability to manage program budgets, program goals and objectives, and coordinate projects within the department. 
  • Understand the importance of cultural preservation, and possess cultural awareness and sensitivity to all situations.
          •        Must have computer knowledge and experience with Microsoft software, GIS program capabilities and GPS Unit operation.
          •        Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients and general public.
       Able to travel frequently, and access areas of interest.
      Must be professional in demeanor and appearance.
      Must have a valid driver licenses and be insurable.
      Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen.
