General Description

The Dental Assistant is a vital member of the dental health team.  This position is located at the Absentee Shawnee Tribal Dental Clinic located at the Little Axe Health Center.  This department provides general dentistry and oral hygiene care services within the AST Health System.  The Dental Assistant will directly report to the Dentist on staff and serves as a “chair-side assistant” in providing dental treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing and maintaining dental instruments, supplies and equipment.
  • Collecting and recording patient health histories.
  • Patient management during dental procedures.
  • Instrument transfer.
  • Dental procedure isolation techniques.
  • Preparation of dental materials, cements, amalgam, composite, impression materials, etc.
  • Prevention and management of dental medical emergencies.
  • Inventory control and management.
  • Delivering patient personal oral care instructions.
  • Participating in community dental health presentations.
  • Planning, setting-up and manning health fair booths.
  • Managing the dental office infection control plan to meet OSHA, CDC, current accreditation and ADA standards.
  • Instrument cleaning, sterilization/disinfection, and re-circulation.
  • Dental treatment room disinfection.

Education Requirements and Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent.
Must have Dental Assistant, Radiation Safety and CPR Certification. 
Must obtain certifications in coronal polishing, nitrous oxide, and sealants within one year of date of hire if not already certified. 
Two (2) years experience in chair-side assisting in a dental office and experience with Dentrix dental software, preferred. 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Must be able to follow and apply established office policies and procedures.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills.  Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and written.
  • Be capable of working effectively with doctor, staff members, and patients under varying conditions. 
  • Be capable of meeting the physical and mental demands of the position i.e. extended periods of standing; frequent interruptions; long, irregular hours.
  • Be able to deal with the pressures and demands of dealing with the ill and injured and their family members.
  • Must have computer skills; be proficient with Microsoft office software.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and submit to a drug screen.
  • Must have a valid Oklahoma Driver License.
