General Description
The purpose of this position is to provide professional nursing care to a patient population exhibiting a variety of illness and injury. The incumbent is subject to the administrative supervision of the Public Health Director, Clinical Services Director, Executive Director and/or Deputy Director of Health, and under the operational supervision of the System’s Medical Director when appropriate to patient care. The incumbent supervises the activities of Licensed Practical Nurses assigned to the Department, as well as nursing students conducting internship, field training, or practicums in the Public Health Nursing Department.
Responsibilites & Duties
Provides screening of patients of all ages to obtain preliminary health histories, makes a physical assessment of patients’ condition using proper nursing protocols, recognizes and reports any unusual or abnormal behavior that may indicate a need for urgent care.
Provides assistance to the Health System’s Medical Director and other primary care providers with medical care and treatment of patient to ensure quality and continuity of care within the parameters of appropriate professional nursing standards.
Participates in testing, vaccinations and health screenings of employees and maintains all clinic employee health records.
Promotes continuity of care by providing medically relevant health care instruction and patient education.
Participate in community outreach by attending community events, health fairs, and other events as requested and approved by director.
Provide health promotion education as indicated and/or ordered by primary care provider.
Provides immunizations and health screenings in the community.
Document in state’s OSIIS vaccination system and IHS vaccine system where applicable.
Provide planning and coordination for the annual health fair in coordination with Health Fair Planning Committee.
Documents within the patient’s electronic medical record any nursing observations and assessments, nursing interventions, therapeutic measure, and nursing notes related to the medical care of the patient.
Participates in continuous quality improvement activities including quality assessments, surveys, and checklist assessments.
Provides written reports to the PH Director, Clinical Services Director, Medical Director and/or Executive Director, Health System, as may be required.
Provides assurance of Confidentiality of Medical Records.
Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Public Health Director, Clinical Services Director, Medical Director, designate and the Executive Director, health.
Organize, plan and execute any grant programs that fall within the department.
Organize, plan and execute activities throughout the year that support and educate our population. 
Provides health promotion activities.
Create monthly newsletter that addresses pertinent health education to be published for the community to read.
Collaborates with emergency response planning and training.
Completes any others activities or duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Must have at least five (5) years of professional nursing experience with at least one (1) year in public health nursing covering a wide range of nursing services from screening and assessments to patient education, counseling, and treatment of minor and chronic illness. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a degree and certified as a Registered Nurse. Associate Degree accepted, Bachelor’s or higher degree preferred.
Must have a professional knowledge of nursing care principles, practices and procedures, working knowledge and application of proper nursing protocols, training and knowledge of pharmaceuticals and their side effects and complications of use.
Ability to observe and react to adverse signs exhibited by patient and the ability to respond appropriately in emergency situations.
Able to educate and counsel with patient regarding their medical care and treatment as ordered by a physician.
Must be certified American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR or be certified within 6 months of hire.
Must be able to effectively relate within local community.
Must be able to respond effectively to oral and written directives.
Must have a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.
Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend or kneel for long periods of time.
Sitting or standing or walking for long period of time; occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, stooping; good finger dexterity and feeling; frequent repetitive motions; talking hearing and visual acuity.
