General Description

The Food Prep Specialist carries on the duties of the kitchen and food prep for the entire center for breakfast, lunch and snacks. 


Role and general responsibilities:
  • Maintain a professional attitude and a flexible, positive approach to their job and must participate in achieving the objectives of the lunch program.
  • Maintain appropriate records and fully understand confidentiality.
  • Participate in achieving the objectives of the Center.
  • Understands and applies the philosophy of Building Blocks CDC.
  • Responsible for ordering and inventory of food to prepare a nutritious breakfast, lunch and snacks every day.
  • In coordination with the Director, create well-balanced, nutritional menus or dissemination to staff and parents.
  • Preparation and distribution of meals in keeping with the Child and Adult Care Food Program policy.
  • Responsible for maintaining and reconciling the CACFP paperwork in a timeline manner.
  • Maintain written recipes and must carefully scrutinize all ingredient labels for food additives and allergens.
  • Must be aware of child food allergies and preparing and serving alternative foods.
  • Maintain the kitchen and all kitchen equipment and storage areas in a clean and orderly manner.  Makes recommendation to the Director regarding kitchen equipment and supplies.
  • Practice the standards respecting municipal health and safety laws with regard to commercial/institutional kitchens.
  • Responsible for reducing waste in the kitchen by recycling and reusing when possible.
  • Works together with other teachers to form a strong team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities regarding Children: The Food Service Prep Specialist is welcoming to the children and makes them feel "at home" in the Center.
  • Most important responsibility is the care, safety, and well-being of all children in the center.
  • Be flexible and able to work with all ages of children.
  • Observe and assist the children as needed in the dining area. 
  • Help promote good nutritional habits and sees that there is a calm atmosphere for lunch and snack.
  • Provides a model of good social conduct.
Responsibilities regarding Administration
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings when required.
  • Maintain prompt hours and notify the Director in the event of illness.
  • Train other staff members in kitchen and center policies as needed.
  • Follow all policies and procedures of DHS, the Center and the Tribe.
  • Has a responsibility to communicate with the Director concerns regarding any problem that cannot be resolved and is leading to a conflicting situation.
  • If child abuse is suspected, you are required by law to report the incident.  You are required to cooperate fully in the investigation of any allegation. 

Education requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have prior experience with Food Service, preferably in industrial/commercial kitchen.
  • Valid OK Drivers License and reliable transportation.
  • Must be willing to follow the Oklahoma Child and Adult Food Program Guidelines.
  • Must have or willing to obtain Food Service training.
  • Must be able to lift, stoop, kneel, and bend in order to pick up heavy cans and food inventory and put in proper storage area.
  • Must be able to pass criminal background check.
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen.
