General Description

The Internal Auditor is to ensure that gaming operation(s) meet the Minimum Internal Control Standards (MICS) of the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC), follows approved policies and procedures, and complies with the Tribal-State Compact. The Internal auditor is also responsible for communicating any instances of non-compliance or any material weaknesses in the casino’s internal control system.  The Internal Auditor will investigate criminal activities, and will have the lead in directing investigations of casino-related financial improprieties, such as shortages, cage or vault theft, accounting fraud, etc.

Responsibilites

 
  • Develop, implement, review/audit schedules as identified in the NIGC MICS, Tribal-State Compact, Tribal Gaming Ordinance and applicable Tribal, Federal, and State laws
  • Prepares written audit reports
  • Investigate, report findings, make recommendations and follow-up regarding variances, material exceptions, deviations or any issues of financial impropriety.
  • Analyze the revenue reporting process through a random sampling of data in accordance with NIGC MICS, Tribal-State Compact, Tribal Gaming Ordinance  to ensure compliance, consistency and proper documentation
  • Analyze the reliability and integrity of financial and operation information and the means used to identify measure, classify and report such information.
  • Observe and analyze gaming procedures to ensure that employees are complying with established policies and procedures and gaming regulations
  • Reports violations of internal control procedures to Executive Director
  • Performs surprise audits to ensure compliance with NIGC MICS, Tribal-State Compact, and Tribal Gaming Ordinance standards
  • Policy and procedure review (TICS and SICS)
  • Assists External Auditors and Compliance Officers as necessary
  • Reports directly to the Executive Director
  • Acts with discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive material
  • Works with outside agencies such as law enforcement, when deemed necessary
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
 

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

 
  • Bachelor’s degree with major course work in accounting or related field preferred; or at least an AA/AS/AAS or equivalent units with major course work in business, accounting or related field required.
  • Two (2) or more years auditing experience, preferably in the gaming industry, banking, and/or CPA firm required.
  • Must be of high moral character and reputation to promote public confidences in gaming by the Tribe
  • Must have excellent organizational skills 
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Understanding of Microsoft Works, Excel, and Peachtree Accounting Software
  • Must have the ability to work irregular hours and/or weekends
  • Must possess strong skills in applying complete fact finding, analytical and problem solving method and technique.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, communication, human relations, and decision-making skills.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and have mature judgment and initiative.
  • Must have the ability to process information effectively, to learn new materials, identify and define problems and to make decisions.
  • Must understand and practice good business ethics, morals, and have a high level of confidentiality.   
  • Must be able to travel if necessary.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Sitting or standing or walking for long period of time; occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, stooping; good finger dexterity and         feeling; frequent repetitive motions; talking hearing and visual acuity.

  • Occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs)

Working conditions

  • Normal casino environment (will be in a smoking environment occasionally)
  • Normal office hours
  • Flexible hours as needed (weeks, nights, and holidays)
