General Description
The Absentee Shawnee Tribe (AST) Behavioral Health Grants Unit seeks a motivated and community-focused Research Assistant to support the NIH HEAL project focused on behavioral health, pain management, mental health, and substance abuse. This position is an excellent opportunity for an individual passionate about research and community engagement. A willingness to learn is required, but prior research experience is not a prerequisite. The role provides hands-on experience and opportunities for professional growth in clinical research and pain management.
Responsibilities & Duties
Assist with organizing and managing day-to-day research operations and subject recruitment.
Perform data entry, cleaning, and organization using research software and tools such as SmartSheet.
Create research tables, graphs, and presentations using MS Office tools.
Assist in various administrative tasks related to research operations.
Coordinate focus group discussions on behavioral health topics.
Assistance with conducting interviews with community members and stakeholders.
Assist with survey distribution, data and form collection, and data entry.
Help in analyzing qualitative and quantitative data.
Write research article summaries.
Assist with basic bookkeeping and invoicing.
Perform other duties as assigned.
 
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Qualifications
Pursuing a degree in a relevant field (e.g., public health, psychology, clinical research, or a related discipline preferred.
Previous experience as a research assistant preferred.
Experience with data entry and descriptive statistics preferred.
Knowledge of Indigenous cultural practices and sensitivities in a research context preferred.
Familiarity with research practices and willingness to learn new methodologies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a passion for working in Indigenous communities.
Proficiency in basic MS Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and work collaboratively in a team.
Must have a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.
Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend or kneel for long periods of time.
Prolonged sitting, standing, or walking; occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, and stooping; good finger dexterity and sensory perception; frequent repetitive motions; as well as talking, hearing, and visual acuity are required.
