Police Department

The Absentee Shawnee Tribal Police Department is comprised of 6 different divisions Patrol, Criminal Investigations, K9, Administration, Narcotics and Special Projects. Each of these divisions is pertinent to the success of protecting the surrounding community and providing a safe environment.

Patrol Division
The Patrol Division protects and serves the communities within the Absentee Shawnee Tribe through patrol, education, training and other community involvement that reduces or eliminates criminal activity. Patrolmen and Reserve Patrolmen within this division provide unique training instructor certifications and qualifications in a plethora of different subject matter, including: Defensive Tactics Instructors, Law Enforcement Drivers Training Instructors, Taser Instructor, Standard Field Sobriety Testing Instructor, Radar Operator Instructor, Hostage Negotiation, and various Weapon Armorer Certifications.
Criminal Investigations Division
The Investigations Division is a complement to the patrol division and is responsible for providing prompt, professional, and effective investigative services including the apprehension and successful prosecution of criminals, as well as the recovery and return of stolen property.
K9 Division
The Absentee Shawnee Tribal Police Department K-9 Team assists with narcotics searches, building searches, tracking, handler protection, public demonstrations and supports the operational functions of all units within the police department.
Administration Division
The Administrative Division is compromised of a very select group of individuals who provide a myriad of different functions. This division conducts all business functions of the department, including: Planning and Research, Logistical Support, Training and Recruiting, Professional Standards and Media Relations.
The Narcotics Division
The Narcotics Division is responsible for enforcing local, state, and federal narcotic violations throughout the jurisdictions of the ASTPD. The Narcotics Division not only conducts complex and long-term narcotic investigations, they also:
  • Investigate and dispose of illegal clandestine labs
  • Divert precursor chemicals
  • Pharmaceutical fraud
  • Illegal marijuana eradication
  • Identify and investigate major drug trafficking organizations that operate on Tribal, State, and Local Land.
The ASTPD Narcotics Division maintains a partnership with its citizens and other law enforcement agencies and community organizations throughout the jurisdictional counties and state. This Division also assists other bureaus, stations, and agencies in a variety of ways:
  • Surveillance operations
  • Electronic monitoring
  • Technical support
  • Undercover operations
  • Covert investigative techniques
  • K-9 drug detection
  • Narcotics Trafficking Interdiction
The success of this division is closely related to the participation within cooperating agencies partnerships. The Narcotics Division is a key factor in the coordination of this effort and participates in a very successful Multi-Jurisdictional Tribal Drug Task Force. Within this mutual effort the Department is able to cover over six different counties worth of interdiction and enforcement. Moreover, the Narcotics division participates with the State of Oklahoma's Bureau of Narcotics in Air Interdiction and Narc Assault.
Special Projects Unit
This Unit contains specialized officers who are dedicated to specific tasks or end goals. There are many different special projects running concurrently at any one time, these tasks range anywhere from participation within Local Counties Warrant Squads to involvement within Multi-Jurisdictional SWAT Teams. This select group of Patrolmen also provides services under grants funded from the US Department of Justice Community Policing Office involving the Methamphetamine Initiative and Tribal Resources Grant Projects. Additionally, there are Patrolmen functioning to provide protections by maintaining and updating the sex offender registry
