The Absentee Shawnee Tribal (AST) Health System is a tribally owned healthcare corporation that services both AST and other Native American Tribal Members.  The ASTHS supports internship programs that provide growth and learning opportunities to students in high school, college, and trade/vocations schools.  We are committed to attracting and locally growing our own talent for a career in the healthcare profession.  Interns are involved in education and training programs designed to provide students with professional experiences and exposure in the hopes of furtherance of their education and training towards securing a healthcare related field, and as such, must have proven they are academically oriented for their benefit and successful completion of the program.  Internships assist students in reaching their educational goals by providing an opportunity to augment classroom instruction with exposure to real world employment setting similar to what they will encounter in their completed programs upon graduation.  We are offering internship positions with the prospect of attracting and locally growing our own talent for a career in a healthcare profession, either locally or within the state. 

Responsibilites & Duties

Expectation/Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Work with staff on policy research/financial operations/budgetary development taskings in a timely manner.
  • Attend and record meetings; assist in preparation of minutes/agendas/Power Point Presentations.
  • Assist in advancing initiatives/community outreach/policy implementation.
  • Assist in all areas as assigned with administrative support/assistance.
  • Assists staff with graphs and charts.
  • Assist in clinical areas as per guidance of directors/professional staff.
  • Call patients and family members for appointments/surveys.
  • Assist in clinical operations as needed under close supervision by department managers/staff.
  • Assist with filing, answering the phone, and other duties as assigned. 
  • Intern will comply with all health system and tribal policies and procedures.

Supervision:  

  • An on-site supervisor will be identified/assigned to manage daily and weekly duties for all interns.
  • Interns will report to assigned supervisor for all training, management oversight, and scheduling requirements or issues. 

Environmental Conditions & Required Physical Demands:

  • Keyboarding/Dexterity: Occasionally; activity exists up to 1/3 of the time Standing/Walking: Constantly; activity exits up to 2/3 of the time Strength (Lift/Carry/Push/Pull): Medium (Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects) Talking (Must be able to effectively communicate verbally): Yes Seeing: Yes Hearing: Yes Color Acuity (Must be able to distinguish and identify colors): Yes
  • Moderate exposure to hazardous risks, including potential for exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment, chemicals. Potential for bodily injury related to lifting and incidents of workplace violence. Must follow universal safety precautions. Exposed to constant interruptions, noise, disagreeable odors, and assorted chemicals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Health System, as appropriate.

Education Requirements and qualifications

Native American Preference/EEO/Drug Free Workplace

  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher in current educational program and be between the ages of 16 and 22 years old.
  • Must have current Oklahoma drivers’ license and/or reliable transportation to successfully participate in internship program.
  • Must be able to complete the Basic Life-Saving (BLS) Certification Course.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English.
  • The Absentee Shawnee Health Programs is a Drug-Free Workplace in accord with the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988, P.L. 100-690, and has a Drug Free Workplace Policy in effect.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug screen.                                                                                              

Work Environment:

  1. Environment must be maintained as clean, non-smoking, well-ventilated work area in adherence to all safety regulation.
  2. Private homes and other facilities will not necessarily meet the criteria of the established safety regulations.
