General Description

Responsible for the public relations initiatives within the Absentee Shawnee Tribe. This position will create, manage, and implement campaigns with the goal of enriching the Tribal Organizations in the public eye and maintain strong relationships within the community. Creating content to accurately represent Tribal goals and visions while supporting the Executive Committee and Tribal staff by creating press releases, print content, media relations, and speaking proposals.    

Responsibilities

  • Planning and implementing publicity strategies, campaigns, and social media calendars.
  • Developing public relations strategies for current and existing Tribal programs.
  • Developing and producing high-quality, informative, and culturally sensitive press releases, press kits, and related materials including proofing articles for publishing.
  • Maintaining good relationships with the media outlets and serving as public face as needed.
  • Organizing Tribal or promotional events, press conferences, as well as approving all print materials.
  • Analyzing media coverage and developing responses when needed.
  • Creating presentations, articles, reports, and information for websites, blogs, and social media accounts.
  • Create, manage, edit and approve the monthly Tribal Newsletters as well as the General Counsel Books.
  • Managing PR budgets, deadlines, objectives, and schedules.
  • Supervise, mentor and lead team members within the Public Relations and Media department to ensure quality performance.
  • Developing weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual media activity reports.
  • Creating budgets, planning events, handling visitors or guests, arranging conferences and all requirements included (security, venue, etc.).
  • Copy edit, proofread, approve, and revise communications.
  • Recommend, implement and maintain website design and operations to ensure that new and consistent information is posted regularly.
  • Plan and deliver education courses and materials to maintain integrity of Tribal Branding.
  • Keeping annual calendars of events, targets, and activities organized and updated.
  • Develop, implement and maintain a cohesive communication strategy.
  • Develop a crisis management and preemptive plan.
  • Initiate communication vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness as well as test effectiveness of communication activities.
  • Developing or commissioning market research as needed.

Education requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, Communications or related field required.
  • MBA or advanced degree in Communications, Marketing or related field preferred.
  • 5 years of experience in Public Relations or related field required
  • Awareness of and proficiency with communications technologies and platforms.
  • Excellent computer skills; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop or related design software. 
  • Positive, self-motivated, manages time efficiently; works well under pressure with multiple deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills; strong copywriting and content creation skills
  • Demonstrated strong and confident leadership skills; Highly collaborative skills
  • Experience developing and implementing communication strategies from ground up
  • Available to work nights or weekends when needed
  • Professional and confident public speaker
  • Able to mentor and supervisor team members under pressure
  • Must be able to pass an extensive criminal background check and drug screening.
