Misty McGirt is the current Secretary of the Absentee-Shawnee tribe of Indians of Oklahoma and was elected to office in June 2023. The office of the Secretary’s responsibilities per the Constitution is to prepare an agenda, notices, and meetings to the Executive Committee and General Council. All records, minutes, documents and correspondence for which the she is responsible for shall be on file at the tribal headquarters at all times, and be custodian of the tribal membership roll and shall give priority to keeping it current. The Secretary shall have working knowledge of the Treasures duties and responsibilities, and shall accept and be responsible for other duties as assigned by the Executive Committee. In the absence of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor, the Secretary shall assume the position of the Governor Pro-Temp.
The Office of the Secretary has oversight responsibilities for Enrollment, Human Resources, MIS, Domestic Violence, Indian Child Welfare, and Main Receptionist. In addition the Secretary is currently the Liaison of the Foster Care Committee and is the oversight of the 477 program along with the other Executive Committee members.
Misty McGirt is the Daughter of Douglas McGirt and LaHoma Roberts, Granddaughter of Margie Kinsey (Spybuck) and the late George McGirt, Turner and the late Mary (Bell) Silmon, and Great Granddaughter of the late Minnie (Blanchard) and Thomas Woodrow (Woody) Spybuck. The family of the home consists of her Partner Brian and children Tiana, Briseis, and Maximus. She is a caregiver to her grandmother as well. She is a Tecumseh Alumni she graduated in 2008. She has been with the tribe many years starting at the Thunder bird casino, and the Health System in 2013 where she worked herself up to leadership positions. 2021 she moved to the Absentee Shawnee Complex until elected into office. She is very active in her tribal ceremonies passed down to her from her ko ko ge (grandma) Margie. She is hi fa pi te (raccoon) clan and participates at the south grounds. She is very devoted, committed, and passionate and excited for this journey in her life to have been given a chance to lead all her Absentee-Shawnee people.
