This position is located at the Absentee Shawnee Tribal Dental Arts Clinic located at Little Axe.  This facility provides general dentistry and oral hygiene care for the members of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe, their immediate dependent family members, and member of other federally-recognized American Indian Tribes and Alaska Natives residing in the tribe’s health program catchment area.  The staff dentist performs dental services of a scope, quality, and quantity which are consistent with established professional standards of care and tribal policies and procedures.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Provides direct general dental services to those eligible for care using techniques of observation, examination, patient history, etc.  Employs diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests as required and employs dental instruments required by the scope of practice.
  2. Initiates referrals to inpatient facilities, specialty care providers, and community health nurses for patients requiring services which are beyond the scope of practice at the clinic.
  3. Serves as a dental service’s representative on the Absentee Shawnee Tribal Clinic Pharmaceutical Committee, the Clinic’s Quality Improvement and Review Committee; and on other boards and committees who might be convened to promote safety, quality of services, peer review, etc.
  4. Oversees the  work of the hygienist and assistants to insure the standards of care are achieved and that clinic safety and infection control standards are met.
  5.  Establishes, participates in, and oversees dental health enhancement programs and seminars for patients, family members, and
                      tribal employees.
        6.    Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
SUPERVISION GIVEN:
The dentist provides functional supervision of the dental hygienist and dental assistants.  The dentist is a member of the tribe’s medical staff and, as such, is subject to the Medical Staff By-Laws and the policies and procedures promulgated by the Executive Director.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must be able to attend continuing medical education courses deemed appropriate for dentists by local, state, and nation professional organizations including the American Dental Association; be capable of meeting the physical and mental demands of the position i.e. extended periods of standing; frequent interruptions; long, irregular hours; and the pressures and demand of dealing with ill and injured and their family members.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Be a graduate of an accredited dental school and be licensed as a dentist by the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry in accordance with the provisions of the State Dental Act of Oklahoma; be certified/licensed by the US Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control to prescribe and administer Schedule 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 drugs;  be insurable by Physician’s Liability Insurance Company of Oklahoma or another firm specializing in dentist’s professional liability coverage deemed acceptable by the Executive Director of Health.
 Must be able to pass a background check.
