Responsibilities

• day-to-day management of the AST Environmental programs and personnel
• Trains staff to effectively carry out all Environmental Program and Grant activities.
• Strong interpersonal and supervisory leadership skills
• Responsible for seasonal sample collection following the protocols identified in the Quality Assurance Project Plan(s) (QAPP’s) for the on-going environmental surveillance program at the Absentee Shawnee Tribe.
• Coordinates scheduling of water sampling events.
• Carry out daily technical support within the AST Environmental Programs.
• Responsible for preparing all grant applications and insuring program work-plans are met.
• Oversees sample collection to ensure proper sampling methods and equipment are used, and that quality assurance and control protocols are met.
• Responsible for equipment maintenance and calibration and submitting water samples to contract laboratories for analysis. Additionally, the Specialist is responsible for weekly reporting, and monthly progress reports with an emphasis on data management.
• Must be familiar with and is accountable for compliance with federal regulations and statutes such as the Clean Water Act (CWA) and Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) as they apply on Tribal lands.
• Oversees and fosters environmental programs community outreach projects.
• Provides cultural awareness and sensitivity of Native American values and culture

education/Knowledge  requirements and qualifications

• A Bachelor Degree in natural, physical, biological or environmental science or a related science field is preferred. With at least three years of experience working with environmental grants/programs.
• Prior Environmental Management experience
• Experience in environmental sampling techniques and quality assurance and control (QA/QC) procedures.
• Must be able to apply basic science and mathematical principles to the understanding of the physical and chemical properties associated with source pollutants in the environment.
• Must have the ability to use computer technology and various software programs, especially MS Windows, Word, Excel, Access, and Internet and e-mail programs.
• Prefer applicant to have Geographical Information System (GIS) knowledge and experience or familiarity with maps, and field surveying using traditional and GPS technology.
• Ability to interact effectively with staff members from government entities such as EPA Region 6 and others.
• Must have effective oral and written communication skills.
• Must prepare Environmental programs grant applications and workplans.
• A working knowledge of applicable federal laws (i.e. Clean Water Act) and other regulations as they are applied to environmental management is required.
• Applicants must have the ability to independently assess and evaluate program needs, coordinate and implement strategies, and apply this knowledge toward program development.
• The ability to perform light manual labor, including the ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Some in-state and out-of-state travel is required.
• A valid Oklahoma Drivers License is required.
• Must be able to pass criminal background check.
