General Description

The Language Technician supports the preservation, documentation, and revitalization of the Shawnee language. This position works closely with the Language Specialist, fluent speakers, elders, instructors, and cultural knowledge holders to assist with recording, archiving, transcription, development of language learning materials, and.
The Technician plays a direct role in safeguarding Shawnee linguistic heritage and ensuring future generations have access to authentic language resources.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Record Shawnee fluent speakers and elders using audio/video equipment
  • Assist with transcription and translation of Shawnee language materials
  • Organize and securely archive digital and physical language resources
  • Support development of Shawnee curriculum materials and classroom aids
  • Maintain language databases, dictionaries, and digital archives
  • Prepare materials for immersion classes, youth programs, and community workshops
  • Assist in updating Shawnee language learning platforms or apps
  • Support grant documentation and reporting requirements
  • Ensure all materials are handled in accordance with Shawnee cultural protocols
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of culturally sensitive recordings
  • Demonstrate respect for Shawnee elders and traditional knowledge holders
  • Follow established cultural protocols for recording and sharing language materials
  • Uphold Tribal sovereignty in all handling of language data
  • Support intergenerational transmission of Shawnee language
  • Represent the Tribe professionally at community language events

Qualifications

Education and Qualifications
  • Basic knowledge of Shawnee language structure (preferred)
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to operate recording equipment and manage digital files
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic database systems
  • Ability to work respectfully with elders
  • Understanding of cultural sensitivity and data protection
  • Conversational ability in Shawnee (preferred)
  • Experience with language documentation software (Audacity)(preferred)
  • Experience working in a Tribal government setting(preferred)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Associate’s Degree in Native American Studies, Linguistics, Education, or related field
  • OR
  • High School Diploma/GED with 2–3 years of relevant experience
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend or kneel for long periods of time.
  • Sitting or standing or walking for long period of time; occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, stooping; good finger dexterity and feeling; frequent repetitive motions; talking hearing and visual acuity.
