General Description
Under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager, the Lead Medical Lab Technician performs moderate complexity testing procedures on body fluids and exudates. They collect and handle specimens from patients for in-house testing and for tests sent to reference labs. They are responsible for daily maintenance, quality control, and quality assurance. They assume responsibility for problem-solving and trouble-shooting equipment. They provide supervision and resources to lab staff when the manager is unavailable. They will help train and mentor technicians to improve their skills and knowledge. They will assist the manager by monitoring inventory levels to ensure materials and supplies are available. They will help to ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
Responsibilities & Duties
Serve as a resource to other lab employees when necessary.
Provide supervision and assistance to staff when the manager is unavailable.
Provide Phlebotomy services; collecting adequate and correct specimens by venipuncture or capillary stick on adults, children, and/or infants.
Perform testing on specimens in the clinical laboratory according to the policies and procedures.
Ensure the accuracy of the laboratory tests performed in the lab by performing and verifying validity of Quality Control in accordance with policies and procedures.
Perform preventative maintenance on the lab equipment according to established maintenance schedule/procedure and troubleshoots all instruments when problems arise.
Verify instrument function by performing QC and calibration when necessary and/or required and documents all repairs, replacement, and maintenance of laboratory equipment on instrument log.
Assist with restocking of supplies in the lab and phlebotomy area, making copies, faxing, shredding, gathering monthly workload data and record filing.
Assist with logging, ordering, and packaging specimens for the reference lab as well as verifying the test results when they are received from reference laboratory for all tests sent out for testing.
Maintain the laboratory according to CLIA standards and maintain absolute integrity in the accurate performance and reporting of results.
Follow HIPPA guidelines for maintaining confidentiality with all patient related information.
Use and understand the laboratory information system referred to as Orchard for ordering tests, resulting tests and printing patient results as needed for the lab.
Use and understand the Electronic Medical Records system and assist with any needed or requested operations or functions concerning the EMR.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements and Qualifications
Education and Qualifications
Associate Degree level and/or successful completion of an Associates of Applied Science.
Completion of a Medical Technician Program (MLT)
3 years’ experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician preferably within this organization.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to interact well with staff and interdepartmental staff.
Ability to assist the manager with mentoring of peers.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Good organizational and assessment skills to assist the manager with process improvements and paperwork.
Ability to fully utilize programs ECW, and Harvest.
Ability to function as a team leader.
Must pass background check and drug screen upon conditional offer of employment.
Must have a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.
Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend or kneel for long periods of time.
