General Description
The position is located within the Absentee Shawnee Tribal Health System and may work in both Little Axe and Shawnee Clinic locations. Clinic staff members provide multi-disciplinary therapeutic and preventive medical care for beneficiaries. The clinical dietitian will assess the nutritional needs of individuals and groups, plans and implements individualized diet and nutritional meal plans for a variety of patient needs and participates in community events to promote health and wellness in Native populations. The dietitian will collaborate with the medical care team and the community to bring the best comprehensive care to our patients and community members. Continuation of position is contingent based on availability of grant funds.
Responsibilities & Duties
Formulate modified diet plans and provides nutrition counseling to clients with therapeutic diet orders.
Provide Medical Nutrition Therapy to high risk patients identified through patient registers, nutrition screening assessments and staff referrals.
Provide clinic and community based nutrition and lifestyle change education programs focused on diabetes prevention and self-management.
Actively participate and facilitate community events focused on health promotion and disease prevention for tribal communities.
Maintain and update documentation of nutrition counseling in patient records as needed to meet the nutritional needs of the patient.
Facilitate delivery of the National Diabetes Prevention Program and maintains all necessary de-identified data required to achieve and maintain CDC recognition as a NDPP provider.
Prepare, review, and select culturally appropriate nutrition education materials.
Prepare, write and submit monthly news articles to Tribal media publications.
Works with other program staff in development of handouts, exhibits, visual aids and brochures for distribution.
Adhere to professional ethical standards and professional standards of practice.
Take reasonable action to inform a client’s physician and any appropriate allied health care provider in cases where a client’s nutritional status indicates a charge in medical status.
Plan, conduct or participate in and interprets, evaluates and utilizes pertinent current research related to nutritional care.
Comply with the provisions of the Oklahoma Controlled Substances Act.
Comply with the applicable state and federal regulations in regard to the security, safety and confidentiality of any health services record they create, maintain, transfer, or destroy whether the record is written, taped, computerized, or stored in any other medium.
Maintain verifiable records at an institution of facility that has a published records retention policy that is equal to or exceeds the retention required by federal and/or state regulations.
Practice only within the boundaries of their competence, based on their documented education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience.
Maintain knowledge and skills required doe continuing professional competence.
Maintain the confidentiality of any information received from any person or source about a client, unless authorized in writing by the client or otherwise authorized or required by law or court order.
Notify the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision within thirty (30) days of any change in address, telephone number, and employment and shall supply an updated copy to Absentee Shawnee Tribe Human Resources.
Renew license or certification and specialty designations before the expiration date.
Provide Absentee Shawnee Tribe Human Resources with a copy of all licensure, certifications, renewal of licensures and certifications upon receipt thereof.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Qualifications
Must possess a baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate degree received from American colleges or universities which held accreditation, at the time the degree was conferred, from accepted regional educational accrediting associations as reported by the American Association of Collegiate Registrar and Admissions Officers which includes a minimum of 24 semester hours from the fields of human nutrition, food and nutrition, dietetics, or food systems management, or an equivalent major course of study as may be approved by the Board. A substantial equivalent major course of study shall be defined as either:
A baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate degree including a minimum of 30 semester hours specifically designated to train a person to apply and integrate scientific principles of human nutrition under different health, social cultural, physical, psychological and economic conditions to the proper nourishment, care and education of individuals or groups through the life cycle. Of these 30 semester hours, a minimum of 18 semester hours must be from human nutrition, food and nutrition, dietetics, or food systems management; or
A baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate degree including a major course of study meeting the minimum academic requirements to qualify for examination by the Commission.
After meeting the academic requirements persons applying for licensure must be registry eligible with the Commission on Dietetic Registration by having completed ab internship or pre-planned professional experience program approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
One year clinical dietetics experience preferred.
Must be certified as a National Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Coach or able to obtain certification within 3 months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must be computer literate required (Windows operating systems – Microsoft Word, Excel). 
Must have a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License.
Must be able to pass a background check and drug test.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend or kneel for long periods of time.
Prolonged sitting, standing, or walking; occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, and stooping; good finger dexterity and sensory perception; frequent repetitive motions; as well as talking, hearing, and visual acuity are required.
