General Description
Coordinates with the Director of Cultural Preservation to analyze, interpret, and catalog resources for the preservation and instruction of the Shawnee language. Partners with tribal Elders and native Shawnee speakers to develop ethnography, oral histories, and language resources. Assists the Director in reporting and project oversight for the Administration for Native Americans’ Native American Language Preservation and Maintenance grant.
Responsibilities
  • Compiles and catalogs existing Shawnee language resources for tribal reference
  • Partners with tribal Elders to create ethnography
  • Designs spreadsheets and software for data collection
  • Establishes partnerships with a repository for language resource storage
  • Interviews tribal members who are Shawnee speakers to collect oral histories and develop auditory instructional language resources
  • Compiles and prepares data for statistical reporting on a quarterly basis to the grant funding agency
  • Upkeeps documentation for grant activities in both print and digital forms
  • Aids in the certification of language teachers
  • Attends required grant meetings and trainings (travel required)
  • Establish and maintain cooperative communication with Cultural Preservation staff and tribal members
  • Assists Cultural Preservation Department with research activities
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
Qualifications / Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required in Communications, English, Linguistics, Cultural Studies, or other related area
  • 5 years’ experience in linguistic analysis, preferably within Native cultures
  • 2 years’ experience in grants
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Thorough knowledge of cultural language preservation and data collection
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with novice language learners
  • Ability to work in a deadline driven environment
  • Proficient knowledge of computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to pass a drug test and background check
  • Native American Preference/EOE/Drug Free Workplace
