General Description

This position is located at the Absentee Shawnee Tribal Health Programs Shawnee Clinic, in Shawnee, Oklahoma.  The Clinic is an ambulatory medical clinic providing a multidisciplinary set of services.  Provides nursing coverage in the Same-Day clinic. Same Day clinic hours are M-F from 9am to 6pm and Saturday from 9am to 4pm.  Same-Day clinic can be open on certain holidays. The LPN in this position may be required to float to our other locations.  

Responsibilities

  1. Obtains patient history, weight, vital signs and assists in the assessment of patients for symptoms of illnesses.
  2. Provides practical nursing services according to established national and tribal standards, including the administration of medications and IV fluids under the supervision of the Clinic Registered Nurse.
  3. Documents medical services provided in the patient's chart including all observations, assessments, nursing interventions, physician orders, treatments plans, and follow up instructions.
  4. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities, surveys and peer reviews.
  5. Assists in the promotion of continuity of care by providing health instructions, patient education and collaborating with other tribal and local health providers.
  6. Assists with the provision of emergency medical treatment as instructed by a supervisor, including assignments relating to the Clinic Emergency Preparedness Plan. Have a basic knowledge of adverse symptoms and possess the ability to react in emergencies.
  7. Prepares and submits required reports and records in a timely manner.
  8. Protects patient confidentiality according to nursing and tribal standards.
  9. Assists with patient intake and information including required eligibility documentation.
  10. Functions as laboratory testing personnel, when needed, under CLIA guidelines.
  11. Functions as radiology personnel, when needed, under guidance of Radiology Department Director.
  12. Provides Phlebotomy services; collecting adequate and correct specimens by venipuncture or capillary stick on adults, children, and/or infants.
  13. Ensure the accuracy of the laboratory tests performed in the lab.  Perform and verify QC is within range as required by the procedure for all tests performed in house.
  14. Provides radiological services as needed per provider order.
  15. Safeguards confidentiality of the medical charts/records and complies with all local, state, and federal laws pertaining to medical records.  Assures compliance with all HIPAA regulations concerning use, retrieval, storage, and sharing of medical records.
  16. Performs other appropriate duties as required or as assigned by a supervisor.

Education Requirements and Qualifications

Education
  • Must Possess a valid license as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Graduation from high school and an accredited school of Practical Nursing conferring eligibility as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Have (2) years of practical nursing experience or equivalent background training including patient assessments, counseling, treating minor chronic diseases and acute emergencies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must hold a current Oklahoma LPN
  • Knowledge of fundamental nursing care principles, practices and procedures
  • Must be reliable, detailed oriented, capable of multi-tasking with excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as strong professional customer- service interpersonal skills.  
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to relate well with co-workers and the general public.
  • Ability to adjust to changing conditions.
  • Must be computer literate required (Windows operating systems – Microsoft Word, Excel). 
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License
  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend or kneel for long periods of time.
  • Sitting or standing or walking for long period of time; occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, stooping; good finger dexterity and feeling; frequent repetitive motions; talking hearing and visual acuity.
