General Description

The assistant manager is responsible to support the daily operations of the department, in areas such as finance, administrative services, and employee supervision as directed by the Radiology Manager. This position is responsible for assisting and operating X-ray, fluoroscopic, and diagnostic equipment that assists radiologists and/or physicians with diagnosing and/or treating disease and/or injury. The assistant manager helps with overseeing the daily operation of the Radiology Department, provides technical guidance and daily leadership to all Radiology positions, and expected to function as a working manager.  As needed, the assistant manager performs administrative functions and assures cross-function support when needed.  The assistant manager ensures the Radiology Department maintains compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, standard operating procedures and good clinical practices.  The assistant manager also solves complex problems with excellent customer service skills under the direction of the manager for the department.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Responsible for the effective operation of the department; assures patients are ready for radiologic procedures through active leadership of the department.
  • Overseeing the preparation of departmental budgets, ensuring that all operational budgetary elements are addressed in the department’s overall budget process, and ensuring that appropriate accounting systems are in place to furnish and verify data on all financial matters with finance/business office.
  • Developing capital equipment plans for new programs and ongoing operations, and overseeing the acquisition of the necessary equipment.
  • Developing operational space need plans for ongoing operations and new programs adopted by the Board of Directors.
  • Observing daily operations and identifying areas where modifications of policies and procedures will improve patient care, safety or efficiency.
  • Collaborating with, assisting in, or directing adequate growth forecasting and strategic future planning.
  • Ensuring that claims, complaints, and inquiries from patients are handled courteously, capably and promptly.
  • Ensuring the regular training of personnel so they develop the knowledge and skills needed to perform their jobs and encourage individual employee development so that future needs of the group are adequately met
  • Protects patient, self, and other staff from radiation hazards.
  • Takes X-rays following established procedures for patient care and safety, which involves setting up and operating radiographic equipment used in the medical diagnosis and/or treatment of patients and includes implementing infection control procedures for the work area.
  • Selects proper ionizing factors for radiological diagnosis. Adjusts/sets radiographic controls.
  • Positions patients and takes X-rays of specific parts of the patient’s body as requested by physicians.
  • Develop and process radiological film and/or appropriate technology for appropriate processing. Checks X-rays for clarity of image, retaking when needed; patient quality is a key factor as the manager.
  • Distributes X-rays to appropriate medical staff.
  • Oversees the proper maintenance/security of required records including patient records, daily log books, and monthly reports.
  • Performs quantity and quality control checks to assure X-ray unit meets standards required by laws, rules, and departmental policies.
  • Complies with safety standards.
  • Assures cleaning is completed, maintains, and makes minor adjustments to radiographic equipment, including determining equipment repairs; coordinates and leads department with contact on external entities such as the OSHD, FDA, and biomedical maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintains radiographic supplies, film, disks, and orders as necessary to sustain operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in radiological technology from accredited X-ray technician program.
  • Current state X-Ray Technology certificate or license. 
  • 5 years’ experience as a Radiology Technician, preferably in a lead capacity for at least half this time.
  • American Registry of Radiologic Technologist registration preferred.
     
SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:
  • Knowledge of X-ray procedures and protocols.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology necessary to perform X-ray testing including body mechanics and patient movement.
  • Knowledge of radiology equipment including safety hazards common to radiology.
  • Skill in identifying equipment problems and correcting or notifying supervisor.
  • Skill in following infection control and radiological safety procedures.    
  • Ability to lift and position patients for the type of X-ray procedure required.
  • Ability to notice detail in drawings and differences in shapes and shadings.
  • Ability to read and write instructions, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. 
  • Ability to present information in one-on-one and small group situations to clients and other employees. 
  • Ability to competently use Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to comply with Quality Assurance (QA) Programs and support quality efforts.
  • The ability to interact well with patients, staff, leadership, and other agency professionals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good organizational and assessment skills.
  • The ability to be a dependable manager of the department.
  • Must pass background check and drug screen upon conditional offer of employment.
  • Excellent Customer Service skills.
Equipment Operated: Radiological equipment used for medical diagnosis and treatment.

Work Environment: Radiological unit. Exposure to disease, radiation, and toxic chemicals in the course of performing the work.

Physical Requirements: Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with an X-Ray Technician such as standing six to eight hours per day. Involves some bending, stooping, squatting, reaching above the shoulders, twisting, turning, kneeling, and pushing, and pulling. Heavy lifting 75+ lbs. required to move equipment and transfer patients. Occasional stress when working with anxious patients.
